“…But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before” Philippians 3:14
One thing that can hold us back from reaching our goals in this life is our past. We keep going back to the times in our lives were people whom we looked up to and trusted have hurt us, disappointed us, and mistreated us. We continued to stir this pot which brings up the feelings of bitterness, anger, hatred, and self-pity. We allow those feelings to overtake us and we cannot go forward because we become stuck.
The Apostle Paul let us know there is a way to get pass this. The one thing that he did was to forget those things that were in his past.
How can we forget? The first thing we must do is recognized that we are holding onto these things. Then we have to stop rolling back the tape of events which happened in our lives such as abuse we experienced in childhood or in a relationship.
Secondly, we must forgive. When we don’t forgive, we give that person power over us because we are still stuck and they have moved on. Our progress in our spiritual walk becomes hindered in every area of our Christ-like life. But forgiveness allows us to release the power that they have over us.
When we become unstuck, we are able to move on in the freedom that this walk of Christ has given us. We are no longer distracted by our past and we can reach towards our goals and the future that Christ has planned for us.
